Market Place
The
market place has always been the town's central meeting point.
Its area of 0,6 Hektar (1,5 acres) stretches like a big trapezium
up to the church Stadtpfarrkirche. In former times, Bad Neustadt's
market place used to be an important center for cattle trade,
and even at the beginning of the 20th century up to 6000 cows
were counted there on market days. Cattle markets and fairs
were held regularly. Even from the times before 1434 prove
exists of fairs at the saint's days Wallburgis, Johanni, Bartholomäi
and Martini. The size of the market was enhanced by the fact
that Bad Neustadt was an important crossroad in the long-distance
trade. On the one hand, the town was situated on the long-distance
road Hamburg-Rome, and on the other hand it was also in the
center of a road network connecting Franken, Hessen, and Thüringen.
This
led to a situation of wealth, which can still be recognized
when looking at the numerous Baroque style houses with their
gable-ends that surround the market place. In the center of
the market place you can find a fountain.
Since 1881, it has been decorated by a statue
that represents a graceful fountain nymph, but that is called
"Marktbärbel" (market girl) by the people of
Bad Neustadt.
Until the year 1927 part of the market place
was an area of grass that sometimes served as a pasture for
minor cattle. It was only in that year that the entire market
place was plastered for the then surprisingly high sum of
25.000 DM.
