The medicinal
springs
It
was in 1853 that the medicinal springs were opened and private
bathing became possible. This is owed to the countess Elisabeth
von Haxthausen, who struggled a long time against the Bavarian
State in order to obtain the permission to use the medicinal
springs. The reason for the State's reluctance was its fear
that competition could be created for the State Spa Bad Kissingen,
situated about 25km to the south of Bad Neustadt. Nevertheless,
the countess was victorious after a struggle that took her
several years.
The famous chemist Justus von Liebig contributed
to the country wide popularity of the medicinal springs through
his analysis of the spring waters. He himself praised them
as the "most distinguished of their kind in Germany".
